An American Spirit!

Jet-lagged and suffering a terrible case of the Monday’s I scanned my outlook calendar at 8AM for some hope.  After taking a moment to convince myself that it was actually July, a sense of elation zipped through me when I realized a perfect holiday decided to squeeze itself into the middle of the week!  Independence day, more commonly known as the Fourth of July, celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.  To me, this is an iconic American holiday, and what better way to toast our great nation than with an iconic American spirit – whiskey that is!

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of the patriotic colored cocktails.  I’d rather save the red, white and blue for my bikini and fill my cup with something amber.  Before you head out to your Fourth of July picnic, take a peek at these delicious cocktail recipes.

Hudson Whiskey Mint Julep

The first bourbon whiskey to be distilled in New York since the time of prohibition, has the perfect Mint Julep recipe to help honor the tradition of the delicious cocktail at home.

In a tall glass or a traditional julep cup, combine 2 ½ Parts of Hudson Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey, 6-8 Mint Leaves and a splash of simple syrup. Stir everything with crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig.

Maker’s Mark® Collins

This Maker’s Mark® version of the Tom Collins substitutes the original premium handmade bourbon for traditional gin. Sweet and strong, this delicious new spin on an old favorite is the perfect way to celebrate!

  • 2 parts Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • 1 part fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Club soda
  • Maraschino cherry and orange slice

In a shaker full of ice, add Maker’s Mark,® fresh lemon juice and sugar. Shake well and strain into a Collins glass filled with fresh ice. Top with soda and garnish with orange slice and maraschino cherry.

Kentucky Bubbly

A favorite in the summer months, this sparkling concoction is a perfect way to impress your guests and refresh them with a hint on bourbon!

  • 1 part Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • Chilled Martinelli’s® sparkling apple cider
  • Maraschino cherry

Add Maker’s Mark® Bourbon to a champagne flute, then fill with chilled sparkling apple cider. Add a maraschino cherry.

Cheers to a happy Independence Day!

Solerno Does Manhattan!

As I walked down Fifth Avenue this morning, I began shedding layers.  First, my Italian cashmere scarf  got crumpled into a ball and thrown into my red leather satchel.  Next, my coat slipped off and ended up draped over my arm.  Finally, my freshly blown out hair ended up twisted in a knot and pinned onto the top of my head.  Ladies (and gentlemen), I believe what this all means is that we have officially kissed the winter months goodbye!

A feeling of excitement has begun to run through my body.  I feel the warmth of the sun drape like a blanket on my newly exposed shoulders and I close my eyes and inhale the scent of Spring, that mixture of morning dew and infant blossoms peaking out of the ground.  I hear the faint sound of birds chirping in between groans of street cleaning trucks.  I open my eyes to this new light that has sprinkled over the city.

All of this spring behavior is really making me crave Sanguinello oranges!  While I enjoyed my months of single malts warming my soul by the fire, my appetite is presently craving a little citrus in my whiskey.  With today being the Vernal Equinox it is the perfect time to kick up our recipes with a little Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur.

Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur brings together modern day spices of life with an appreciation for classic luxuries. Inspired by the classic Manhattan cocktail, Solerno adds a taste of whole-fruit blood orange and a hint of bright lemon to an all-time classic.  To celebrate the beginning of Spring I am ready, shaker in hand, to run home and whip up a batch of Solerno Sicilian Manhattans!

Solerno Sicilian Manhattan

2 oz. Hudson Manhattan Rye

.5 oz. Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur

.5 oz. Averna Amaro

Stir ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.  Garnish with an orange twist.

Cheers to an early Spring!
