Whiskey During a Heatwave

Summer in New York City – while we all dream about it during the short, dark days of winter, when the heat index sky-rockets to 105, summer isn’t as glamorous as it seemed.  Thanks to the unbearable humidity and scorching sun, lately I have felt like I am living in a perpetual sauna.  My hair is in a constant state of frizz perched over my sweat drenched skin.  It’s the kind of heat that makes you scour the streets for shady trees and coffee shops blasting cool air.  Despite the grueling temperature and the desire to sit inside my perfectly chilled apartment, my whiskey itch always wins, sending me out in search of a refreshing beverage…and hopefully a good story or two!

Now I know what many of you are thinking “whiskey?!  In 100 degree weather!”  The great thing is that whiskey is not just a cold weather tipple.  In fact, some of my favorite ways to enjoy the delicious amber liquid are heat wave approved and tested by yours truly!

Whiskey Sour – a simple and delicious cocktail combining whiskey (often bourbon), fresh lemon juice and sugar.  The best whiskey sours have a dash of egg white to create a frothy white top on a mountain of ice cubes.

Mint Julep – Often associated with the Kentucky Derby, the mint julep originated in the southern United States.  Today mint juleps are made with a variety of different spirits, but my favorite is the old-fashioned version: mint leaves, bourbon, sugar and water.  You know you have found a great mint julep when it is served in a silver or pewter cup coated by a chilly frost outside the cup.

Bourbon Cream – On a recent trip to Kentucky I was introduced to Buffalo Trace’s latest addition, Bourbon Cream.  The liqueur is a sweet creamy bundle of vanilla and Buffalo Trace Bourbon.  We mixed it with root beer for an incredible dessert treat – the perfect end to a hot summer day!

Stay cool!

An American Spirit!

Jet-lagged and suffering a terrible case of the Monday’s I scanned my outlook calendar at 8AM for some hope.  After taking a moment to convince myself that it was actually July, a sense of elation zipped through me when I realized a perfect holiday decided to squeeze itself into the middle of the week!  Independence day, more commonly known as the Fourth of July, celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.  To me, this is an iconic American holiday, and what better way to toast our great nation than with an iconic American spirit – whiskey that is!

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of the patriotic colored cocktails.  I’d rather save the red, white and blue for my bikini and fill my cup with something amber.  Before you head out to your Fourth of July picnic, take a peek at these delicious cocktail recipes.

Hudson Whiskey Mint Julep

The first bourbon whiskey to be distilled in New York since the time of prohibition, has the perfect Mint Julep recipe to help honor the tradition of the delicious cocktail at home.

In a tall glass or a traditional julep cup, combine 2 ½ Parts of Hudson Four Grain Bourbon Whiskey, 6-8 Mint Leaves and a splash of simple syrup. Stir everything with crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig.

Maker’s Mark® Collins

This Maker’s Mark® version of the Tom Collins substitutes the original premium handmade bourbon for traditional gin. Sweet and strong, this delicious new spin on an old favorite is the perfect way to celebrate!

  • 2 parts Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • 1 part fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Club soda
  • Maraschino cherry and orange slice

In a shaker full of ice, add Maker’s Mark,® fresh lemon juice and sugar. Shake well and strain into a Collins glass filled with fresh ice. Top with soda and garnish with orange slice and maraschino cherry.

Kentucky Bubbly

A favorite in the summer months, this sparkling concoction is a perfect way to impress your guests and refresh them with a hint on bourbon!

  • 1 part Maker’s Mark® Bourbon
  • Chilled Martinelli’s® sparkling apple cider
  • Maraschino cherry

Add Maker’s Mark® Bourbon to a champagne flute, then fill with chilled sparkling apple cider. Add a maraschino cherry.

Cheers to a happy Independence Day!

Sweet Tooth With a Touch of Bourbon

Around 3PM each afternoon my sweet tooth kicks in as I scour the office for a left over piece of Dairy Milk from a UK visitor or what crumbs remain of the cookies from yesterday’s board meeting.  Usually I am left with a choice between a bowl of apples or a Tullamore Dew and Coke.  Knowing that pouring a whiskey mid-day is not the most responsible choice I started thinking about other ways to incorporate the delicious spirit into something sweet to conquer my craving.

What could be better then Bourbon infused desserts?  The mildly sweet, smooth spirit is perfect for dribbling over cake, pouring out of the center of fried dough, or making a creamy milkshake buzz worthy.  Below are some of my NYC addictions.

Where to go: Jane’s Sweet Buns – Pastries inspired by cocktails.

Have your cake and drink it to!  The shops spit fire owneress, Jane Danger, has a bartending background at the renowned Cienfuegos but has traded her cocktail shaker in for a bakers sheet and rolling pin.

What to order: The Old Fashion  Pecans, Bourbon, Sugar, Vanilla, Angostura Bitters are combined to create this perfectly sticky treat.

Find it here: 102 St. Marks Place between 1st Ave/Avenue A NYC 10009

 Where to go: Flex Mussels

Shhh…it’s a secret.  Well, kind of!  After a meal of some of the most unique mussel dishes prepare to indulge in an off-menu collection of warm donuts injected with some of your favorite booze libations.

What to order: Instead of grabbing the rather usual desert menu, pass it up and slyly ask for “the donuts” instead.  You will not be disappointed with the fluffy sugar rolled circles of dough oozing with a creamy spiked center.  Hopefully you will get the Maker’s Mark Caramel!

Find it here: 154 West 13th Street (Between 6th and 7th Avenues)

Where to go: Burger & Barrel

A modern take on traditional foods.  Try a burger smothered in bacon jam but make sure to follow up with a milkshake for adults only!

What to order: The Caramel Twist.  The smooth mix of vanilla ice cream and sticky caramel sauce is complimented by the sweet burn of Maker’s Mark bourbon.  If you must, skip the burger and go straight for the dessert!

Find it here: 25 West Houston Street, NYC at the corner of Mercer Street
